Eating Cheap – How to Get by and Eat Well on 20 Dollars Per Week

A lot of friends and acquaintances ask me how I save so much money and stay in great shape without even working out. The answer is always profoundly simple and always catches them off guard. Whenever I give them the plan to do it, they end up saving 300 dollars a month, minimum. If you want to save hundreds of dollars per month (or per week depending on your habits), as well as get in great shape, here is exactly how I do it:

You’ve got to cook meals at home using some key ingredients from grocery stores that you need to start picking up. For example – if you grab a drink at a coffee shop or starbucks in the morning, and get a crappy fast food meal on the way to, or back from work, you’ll already save 300 dollars (and your health) by switching it up. Here are they key ingredients you need to work it:

Beans (canned, any variety you enjoy)

Eggs

Bread

Tomato sauce (pasta sauce, jarred or canned)

Pasta

Oil (olive oil or canola oil)

Basic spices, such as salt, pepper, oregano, basil, etc

Vegetables that are ON SALE, such as potatoes, onions, peppers, etc

Meat (beef, chicken breasts, drumsticks, thighs, etc, fish) that are ON SALE

You’ll need to wake up 10 minutes earlier to make breakfast – but the money you’ll save adds up to a few DAYS of work per month. Here are some basics you can make with eggs: hard-boiled (almost no effort), scrambled, over-easy, fried, poached, omelet (using any variety of veggies). Pop in some toast, and you have a solid and healthy breakfast costing about 50 cents. If you make a bad processed microwave or oven-ready breakfast, or grab something on the way to work, in addition to Starbucks or some other coffee chain, you’ll already save 300 per month just on one meal of the day by switching it up.

For lunch you have a lot of options if you pre-make the meal and bring it to the office. You can slap pan-fried chicken breasts on bread with veggies and your choice of dressing, all for around a dollar for a delicious and healthy meal. You can make pasta and bring it in tupperware. It’s up to you.

For dinner, you can make any meat you picked up along with sauteed vegetables, steamed broccoli, potatoes, anything really. It’s up to your imagination. Cooking instead of popping in some microwaveable or processed pre-made dinner will save you 5 dollars per meal.

These changes will not only have you shedding several pounds per week (without even being hungry), but you’ll gain valuable cooking skills, and will save between 300-600 dollars per month depending on how you eat right now. That’s enough for a luxury car lease, or enough to pay for some of or all of your rent. Any of my friends that have stuck with this shower me in thanks – the money comes out of thin air in a way, and they can enjoy using it on other more important things, not fast food they take for granted anyway.

3 Ways to Avoid Childhood Obesity

There is a lot of talk these days about childhood obesity and why it seems that today’s children are more overweight than the previous generations. There are a lot of factors that play into why this may be the reason and I’m sure some of them you may have heard from the media.

The fact of the matter is we live in a different time and nothing remains to be stagnant. The priorities of families have changed and how we spend our time has changed as well. We don’t look at time the same way we used and money as well. With this in mind it reflects the appearance on our bodies.

Everyone knows that eating at McDonald’s could be the cause of childhood obesity, and it’s simple to say that’s the problem. But there is so much more to it than just that. What I see as a major contributor to obesity in children and adults is “lack of time”. Today people are so busy and they just aren’t taking the “time” that’s needed to prepare a healthy dinner. We are all on the run and it’s so easy to just pick-up a cheeseburger at the local McDonald’s. Besides you must think maybe that’s what my child really wants Well, yes and no. Of course your child wants some French fries but is it good for them? No. A French fry here or there will not hurt but a regular diet of McDonald’s will hurt.

The United State takes less time in enjoying the occasion, it’s just so quick and easy to eat and go.

Another factor that is causing obesity is the quality of food in our school systems. Canned this and that with sugar in it, canned veggies, fried chicken nuggets, soda machines in the hallway. All of this stuff almost seems normal. No, it’s not acceptable to have soda in school and junk food. Pizza day on Friday, seems like pizza day everyday. Fresh fruits and veggies should be the choice and the healthy alternative.

The third reason for obesity is the lack of physical exercise. In the last decade children have increased the amount of time they online and watching TV. They have reduced the time spent burning calories. So even if you eat a chicken nugget you have just avoided the ability to burn off the calories. Fresh air and exercise are important every day for adults and children as well.

So the next time you wish to have that cheeseburger, think about having an apple with some peanut butter dip. Get out every day for some exercise which gives you the opportunity to burn off calories.

Canned Goodness Makes Salmon an Easy Meal

Many people may think that the only way to enjoy salmon is to pay a hefty amount for some fresh steaks or fillets from the market. While fresh salmon is a tasty treat, for those with a little tighter budget salmon is still a very attainable meal option. Canned salmon is a great way to incorporate fish into any meal while bearing cost in mind. There are a lot of great recipes for canned salmon that please the palate and satisfy the hungriest appetite.

One great recipe is for cheesy salmon patties. This recipe calls for one can of salmon, a small onion, one egg, ½ cup of bread crumbs, 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce, 1/8 teaspoon of hot pepper sauce, ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper, ¼ cup of shredded Cheddar cheese, 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour, 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley, ¼ cup of butter, and 3 tablespoons of olive oil. When all of these ingredients have been assembled you then mix the salmon, bread crumbs, egg, onion, hot pepper sauce, parsley, cheese, Worcestershire sauce, and black pepper. From this tasty mixture form four patties and lightly dust them with flour and allow them to chill for twenty minutes.

After the patties have chilled, heat the butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat until they are nicely browned on each side. Once the patties are done be sure to drain them quickly before serving them to guests. The whole process takes about forty minutes and is a great, simple recipe for canned salmon. For fans of canned tuna the salmon variety is a great way to change things up a bit. Make a nice spin off of regular tuna salad by using salmon instead. As salmon is known as a “super food” due to the omega-3 fatty acids it contains, it is easy to make a delicious heart healthy snack or meal. Indeed, these are some of our favorite recipes for canned salmon.

For salmon salad you need 2 cans of salmon, 2 tablespoons of regular or fat free mayonnaise, 2 tablespoons of plain low-fat yogurt, 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper, 1 cup chopped celery, 8 lettuce leaves, and 2 tablespoons of capers. Mix all of the ingredients in a big bowl and do with it what you please. The salad works great on top of lettuce, in sandwiches, on crackers, or by itself. This recipe for canned salmon is a nice twist on an old classic. Tasty and heart smart, canned salmon is an easy and more economical way of incorporating the delicious fish into a daily diet.

All of these meals are super easy to make. Just hop on the trusty Internet, and look for recipes for canned salmon before heading out to the supermarket.

The Economic Collapse Part 2

With the exponential growth of debt and derivatives, a sovereign debt default could trigger economic shockwaves that would make the previous 2008-09 economic collapse look like the pre-shocks of a much larger earthquake. Episode #09 – Pappa al Pomodoro – Italian Cooking

Welcome back to Under The Tuscan Gun. As promised, and long overdue, please enjoy: PAPPA AL POMODORO. Florentine farmers used to cook this soup using stale bread that was saved during the week, garlic, tomatoes and basil from their gardens: this is the most humble dish I know, well, after boiled white rice… Now, if you go to a restaurant, the tradition is slowly disappearing, and it is becoming very hard to find a good old recipe that works; that’s why Deb and I decided to feature in this first episode two very dear friends of ours, Rosanna and Matteo. The good recipes are still secretly hidden into very old Tuscan homes, like The Farm Pacina, in Castelnuovo Berardenga, a little town that rests on the hills between the Chianti Area and Siena. Pacina was originally an Etruscan site, then it became a convent in the nine hundreds and after eight centuries the property was sold by the church and became private. Today Pacina is an Agriturismo and a Yoga retreat, Olive Oil and Wine are produced and distributed in Tuscany…a place worth a long weekend! Pappa al Pomodoro (Tomatoes and Stale Bread Soup) Serves 6 (plus leftovers) Finding the right kind of bread to make Pappa is harder then actually preparing the dish. Bread should be unflavored, unsalted, not too doughy, with a crust that is actually a crust. Because you need to use stale bread, you have to give yourself some time to dry it. The best way, once you’ve found the right loaf, is to slice it, and lay the slices on a
